Film: Buried

Being trapped in a coffin with Ryan Reynolds for an hour and a half.

For the uninitiated Buried is a film about a man kidnapped by terrorists and buried underground with minimal supplies and little chance of escape. The film follows him attempting to get outside help in escaping and starting to mistrust the people who are trying to save him.

Ryan Reynolds plays terrified and pissed off rather well - you don't see any other emotions. He’s scared at the prospect of his impending death and pissed off that the people tasked with helping him are being so unhelpful. Ryan Reynolds is the only main character with the whole thing being set in the coffin and other people only being heard over the phone. Considering that Reynolds normally only appears in comedies is performance is surprisingly good, gripping you to his harrowing story. Near the end of the film Reynolds finally gets in contact with his wife in America and you can feel his relief at getting to talk to her at last.

The film is incredibly well shot, making the viewer feel as trapped in the coffin as the main character. Watching it alone in the dark you too start to feel a little claustrophobic.

Considering that very little happens it kept me engaged for the hour and a half. The film as a whole seems to be a bold, negative commentary on American tactics with dealing with terrorists. They adamantly refuse to negotiate with the terrorists despite this man’s life being at stake. Late in the film a military air-strike of the region nearly causes a cave-in of sorts inside Reynold’s coffin. The film can be quite depressing but is fitting considering the plot. I found the ending quite predicable from the start but it still carries emotional weight.
