Comics: Avengers #3

Wrapping up the first arc for the series, in a rather speedy manner, this issue is exciting but also shows a few potential flaws for the comic going forward.

As I feared, with such a big cast many characters are pushed in to the background, some are lucky to get a line or two while it’s easy to forget others are there. Spider-man and Wolverine get some great lines, particularly related to the trap the captured heroes are kept in. Most of the new Avengers don’t get much chance to establish themselves.

While the conflict is by no means a failure, after building to it for two issues it’s dealt with with relative ease. This almost feels like it is the point, no conflict is too big for united might of this new, massive Avengers team. However, the inclusion of the godlike Captain Universe raises the stakes on the Avenger’s side far too much. She could have potentially dealt with the issue all by herself, making the team and the fighting before it seem pointless.

Jerome Opeña continues his fantastic work on the series, keeping it’s epic scale. Even seemingly simple elements like the plant life on Mars look totally beautiful and richly detailed.

While the issue shows a few stumbles, hopefully the series will find its footing and discover how to use it’s huge cast to greater effect.
