Spider-man Rebooted

In 2002, Sony Pictures released the first in a series of Spider-man movies and two hugely successful sequels followed. Now instead of bringing a fourth film into the franchise Sony has instead decided to fire all the people involved and make a ‘reboot’ of the series. Maybe this is just me but Spider-man 3 was only released in 2007, that’s got to be some sort of record right? Knowing that a film series I watched when I was a teenager is being rebooted just makes me feel old. I remember there being a question of whether me and my friends could get into the first film because we were all under 12 (luckily the cinema in my home town was run by teenagers who really didn’t give a crap) as this was before the 12A rating. OK, reminiscing about a time before 12A just makes me feel even older. Maybe I should stop this tangent before I start talking about the good old days and all these high tech 3D films plus this new fangled thing called blu-ray, so I’ll insult their choice for Peter Parker/Spiderman.
It’s not so much that I hate Andrew Garfield, I’m sure he’s a charming man. And maybe he is the right choice for Spider-man, a 30-year-old Spider-man not a Spider-man in high school. I know its common in Hollywood but still, there getting a man seven years older than me to play a character at least two years younger! So many of the people considered were age appropriate. Now I’m probably gonna spend the film thinking, “what the hell is he doing in high school, he should have graduated university by now!’ And their choice of villain gets me even more riled up, Rhys Ifans as Dr Connors! I’m just praying Connors doesn’t have a Welsh accent because I can’t imagine a Welsh version of The Lizard. Well, actually I can. It’s not scary. It’s hilarious!
But something annoys me even more than what I’ve mentioned previously. Director, Marc Webb has stated that he wants his film to be filled with less action and to show more of Spider-man’s feelings. I already thought Peter whined too much in the other films, I don’t need more scenes of him complaining about his inability to get a girl and crying in a corner every time a villain beats him. They’re turning my favourite childhood superhero into a cry-baby! This is why Batman will always be better.
I really wish they had at least waited till I was middle-aged to remake Spider-man as a 3D disaster. When the new film is released it’ll have been ten years since the first one. Hell maybe they could have waited another ten years so people don’t remember the originals to reboot it. I’m assuming they think the superhero genres going to die out before then so they want to squeeze as much out of it while they can. It used to be 30-40 years before a film would be remade; now it’s ten. What’s next?
