Comics: Uncanny X-men #3
Several plots come to a head in this issue, as Cyclops’ X-men come face to face with the Avengers and the traitor reveals themselves to the team.
This is the first time Cyclops and Captain America have spoken since the end of Avengers Vs X-men and we get something that was sorely missing from the end of that series; Scott telling Cap to “go to hell”. At the end of the event the Avengers just seemed to totally forget that Cyclops was possessed by the Phoenix, totally blaming him for the death of Charles Xavier. It was like they forgot that Iron Man started it all by dividing the Phoenix and until they come along the Phoenix 5 were doing peaceful things. So it’s fantastic to finally see Scott and Emma argue their case directly to the Avengers, even if their thick skulls can’t comprehend it. The anger on Scott and Emma’s face is palpable, as is the shock on the Avenger’s faces; as they believe themselves to be in the right
Rather than coming down to a conflict, one of Scott’s new mutants Eva gets to show just how powerful she is; freezing the Avengers in a time bubble for an extended period of time. It’s interesting just how strong her ability is when she hasn’t been practicing it for long. Chris Bachalo perfectly illustrates Eva’s shock at her prowess, as well as making the time bubble look very impressive.
Back at the base, Magneto shockingly reveals himself as the traitor to the team and suggests that he is double-crossing SHIELD. He wanted to see how they’d react to Scott and now they know SHIELD will send even the Avengers after them. It’s a strong reveal and I’m glad they didn’t drag out his double crossing, as I would have expected Bendis to do. Maybe he’s learning, although Age of Ultron suggests otherwise so far. At the end of the issue, with the Avengers still in suspended animation, Cyclops decides to travel to the Jean Grey School to see if he can recruit any new members. This same moment ends All New X-men #9, suggesting a cross over between the two titles.
A continuation of this very strong series, I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
