Film: Despicable Me 2
For those who haven’t see Despicable Me, it centres on a super-villain, Groo as played by Steve Carell, who adopts three young girls, Margo, Edith and Agnus, as part of a scheme but chooses to become their father rather than carrying out his master plan. The sequel picks up with Groo, now a successful father, being recruited by the Anti Villain League to discover who has stolen a top-secret formula. He gets partnered with the sexy and quirky Lucy, Kristen Wiig, developing feelings for her.
Groo is still a great character, getting to act as a sweet father, secret agent and superhero. He gets many chances to be a badass throughout the film, especially during the final mission when he has to take on an army of evil minions. His romance with Lucy is funny yet believable, the two falling in love gradually without even really realising it. Lucy is a great addition to the cast, and Groo’s family, providing an adult female presence that the past film lacked while also being very funny in and of herself. While the plot doesn’t focus on Groo’s family life quite so much they get some time to shine, with Margo even getting a romantic subplot with a young player. The girls are incredibly adorable, particularly Agnus who is still the littlest, cutest thing ever.
The minions once again steal the show and an entire subplot is devoted to them goofing around. They get many moments to shine, showcasing their insane brand of humour. A music video-like scene towards the end is one of the funniest moments of the film, coming out of nowhere to put the audience in stitches. The evil minions are well designed, looking suitably frantic and bizarre.
The only problem I really have with the film is that due to the villain’s identity being hidden you don’t really get to see a lot of him. It is quite obvious who the villain is however, making all the mystery quite unnecessary.
As a whole the film is a delight, incredibly sweet and featuring great comedy making it a must-see this month.
